About Vidgrid
We started in 2021 as an internal toolchain for a post-production studio that was tired of shipping 40 GB masters over consumer file lockers. The transcoding pipeline turned out to be more useful than the studio, so we spun it out.
Everything runs on hardware we rent directly. Uploads are streamed straight into the encoder rather than staged on disk first, which is why the first chunk of a converted file starts coming back before the upload has finished.
Infrastructure
Encoding nodes sit behind a content delivery layer so that large downloads are served from a point of presence close to the viewer. Source files are removed 24 hours after the last download.
